Ten records sharing a release date can make the calendar look unusually decisive. Our selection for Friday, 18 September moves from Roxette to Boy Harsher, with Tina Turner, Rhiannon Giddens and Anthrax among the company. Seating them at dinner might take a little thought. Finding a place for them in a record shop is rather easier.

There is no requirement to choose one musical personality for the week. A shelf can accommodate a familiar chorus, a new voice and something considerably less inclined to keep the peace. That is part of the pleasure of looking through a mixed selection: the next sleeve gets to interrupt whatever plan you arrived with.
