Some records arrive with subtlety. Others arrive with a headlight pointed straight through the middle of the sleeve.

Away from the Sun belongs to the second group, and it does not apologise for the beam. The cover is mostly black, then suddenly there is that blurred red and yellow flare, a white block, the 3 Doors Down logo and the title sitting underneath like the whole thing has been caught in the middle of a late drive.

3 Doors Down are on the shelf today, and the catalogue facts give us a clean enough starting point: Away from the Sun, 2LP, 2002, Rock. The product notes also mark this copy as a 15th Anniversary edition, which suits a record that has spent plenty of time living in people's memories already.

This was the band's sophomore effort, according to the catalogue notes, and that position matters. A second album has a particular pressure on it. The first one has opened the door. The second has to prove there is a house behind it, with rooms, plumbing, arguments and somewhere to put the enormous choruses.
