Some records arrive tidy, with their shoes clean and their argument already typed. Invitation to the Dance arrives looking as if it has had a disagreement with the floor, the walls and possibly the lighting rig.

The sleeve is a useful warning. There is cracked ground, sickly green weather, a shouting figure, the 40 Below Summer logo bent into its own language and that red invitation card held out like a dare. It does not look like a polite evening. It looks like a door opening into a room where the air has already been pushed around.

The catalogue has it as 40 Below Summer, Invitation to the Dance, LP, Metal, 2001. The product notes add the important physical detail: vinyl LP, 180g translucent green. That colour choice makes sense. A record this restless should not look like it came from a stationery drawer.

The Kilmorna notes place it in early-2000s nu metal and alternative metal, with groove-heavy riffs, raw vocals, thick guitars and emotional pressure. That is a fair address. This is not metal as a clean line across the page. It lurches, snaps back, finds the downbeat and then throws itself at it again.
