Some records announce how much work has gone into them. Midnight Marauders lets the work sit comfortably inside the groove. A Tribe Called Quest make the invitation easy: follow the drums, settle into the low end, and let the voices pull your attention closer.

Released in 1993, this is the group's third studio album. Its jazz-inflected hip-hop feels relaxed without becoming vague. The drums give the music clear edges, while the melodic material leaves room for speech to remain speech: conversational, agile, and full of changes in emphasis.

That balance is the first thing worth listening for. The rhythm can carry you along before you have caught every turn of a verse. Then a vocal phrase makes you lean in, and the apparently easy ride starts revealing its smaller workings.
