Some records do not announce a new direction so much as stand in the doorway and let the room behind them change temperature. Anathema's Eternity is that kind of album. The interesting part is how little it behaves like a simple genre document.
This is Anathema in the act of becoming another band. The catalogue description puts it neatly: the group stop behaving like a doom metal band and start thinking like a rock group with a painter's sense of atmosphere. That is the useful hinge. The heaviness is still there, but it has learned to wait, to hover, and to let silence do some of the lifting.
The sleeve already suggests that shift. A white angel statue floats against red-black cosmic weather, with the Anathema logo hanging above it like a carved shadow. It is not subtle, thank heavens, but it is not blunt either. It has the melodrama of metal and the stillness of a shrine, which is a fair visual summary of the music inside.
Sentient opens in a hush that feels like aftermath. It is a good first move because it asks for attention rather than grabbing it by the collar. The album's patience starts there.
