Today's Shelf Pull: Beastie Boys, Three Lads and a Room Full of Wires

Beastie Boys Check Your Head vinyl record staged on the Kilmorna record shop counter

Beastie Boys' Check Your Head is on the shelf today: a 2LP reminder that rap, punk, funk and messing about can all behave like one excellent bad idea.

Some records sound as if nobody sensible was allowed into the room until it was too late.

This is usually a problem. Occasionally, it is the whole point.

Check Your Head is the Beastie Boys rebuilding the workshop after Paul's Boutique, picking up basses, guitars, drums, keyboards, jokes, dub smoke, punk speed and hip-hop timing, then deciding that all of it could share the same battered table if everyone stopped being precious.

That is a dangerous way to make a record. It can turn into a student flat with cables.
