Today's Shelf Pull: David Bowie, Polished Shoes and Boxing Gloves

David Bowie Let's Dance vinyl record staged on the Kilmorna record shop counter

David Bowie is on the shelf today with Let's Dance: a 1983 LP where glossy pop rock, Nile Rodgers rhythm and one very composed boxing sleeve all arrive with their hair behaving better than ours.

Some records arrive with mystery all over their coat.

Let's Dance arrives with boxing gloves, blue light, a plan for the evening, and the expression of someone who has already checked the mirror and found no emergency.

David Bowie is on the shelf today, and the sleeve is doing useful work before the needle gets anywhere near the record. Bare shoulders, gloves up, a shadowed fighting stance, the big blue Bowie lettering, and that little diagram of dance steps across the cover as if the whole thing might be a self-defence class for people with excellent trousers.

Good. Pop should know how to stand in a room.
