Vol. 4 captures Black Sabbath pushing beyond the crushing foundations of their early records without surrendering an ounce of weight. “Wheels of Confusion” opens in sprawling, shape-shifting form, while “Supernaut,” “Snowblind” and “Under the Sun” deliver the kind of monumental riffing that made the band a defining force in heavy metal. Tony Iommi’s guitar remains the anchor: blunt, inventive and instantly recognisable, with Geezer Butler and Bill Ward giving every turn real physical momentum. The album’s power also comes from its contrasts. “Changes” strips the sound back to piano, voice and exposed melancholy; “FX” is a brief experimental interruption, and “Laguna Sunrise” brings a graceful acoustic calm. Ozzy Osbourne moves between wounded reflection and ominous command, binding those shifts into a coherent whole. Heavy, strange and unexpectedly vulnerable, Vol. 4 is Sabbath at their most exploratory—an album built for attentive listening as much as sheer volume.
Vol. 4 widened the possibilities of heavy music, placing colossal riffs beside piano-led vulnerability, acoustic detail and studio experimentation. Its combination of menace, melody and restless invention helped establish a vocabulary that later heavy metal, doom and hard rock artists would repeatedly revisit.
