Impera is Ghost building a marble staircase to the end of the empire. Released in 2022, the band's fifth album turns away from Prequelle's plague allegory and toward a broader fantasy of rise, domination, decadence and collapse. It is one of Tobias Forge's most unapologetically grand records: full of gleaming guitars, stacked harmonies, melodramatic bridges and songs that sound designed to make historical ruin feel like a stadium event. Kaisarion begins with velocity and bright classic-metal lift, setting up an album that often feels less interested in murk than in spectacle. Spillways is pure Ghost sugar rush, a power-pop engine hidden inside a hard-rock cathedral. Call Me Little Sunshine brings the shadows back with a slow, sinister invitation, while Watcher in the Sky stretches the band's riff craft into something mechanical and obsessive. Twenties adds grotesque swagger, and Respite on the Spitalfields closes with the sense that all this splendour was always haunted by its own ending. What keeps Impera compelling is that it treats excess as subject matter as well as sound. The album is polished, sometimes flamboyant, sometimes knowingly absurd, but that scale fits its theme. Ghost are not asking whether empire is tasteful; they are showing how seductive decline can become when it is given a chorus, a spotlight and a perfectly timed guitar break.
Impera matters as the clearest statement of Ghost's arena-era ambition. It captures the band after their crossover had fully taken hold, using classic rock grandeur and metal drama to write about power at the point where confidence becomes rot. It is both accessible and conceptually loaded, which is a hard balance to keep.
This is the Ghost album to choose when the collection needs their largest, most theatrical modern sound. It pairs naturally with Prequelle but feels more architectural: less plague march, more imperial pageant. For listeners following the band's evolution, Impera documents the moment when Ghost fully embraced scale as part of the songwriting.
Arena-sized occult hard rock with bright guitar harmonies, power-pop choruses, heavy-metal theatre, sinister slow burns and a polished sense of imperial decay.
Recommended for: Collectors following Ghost's move into full arena scale; Fans of melodic hard rock with conceptual drama; Listeners who like metal theatrics with unusually sharp pop hooks.
