Prequelle is Ghost turning plague imagery into arena theatre. Released in 2018, the album arrives after Meliora had moved the Swedish band from cult fascination toward a much larger rock audience, and it understands that scale immediately. The songs are brighter, bigger and more open than the band's earliest work, but the sweetness is never innocent. Under the choruses sits a record about collapse, sickness, religious spectacle and the way public disaster gets dressed up as ritual. Rats opens the door with a hard, hook-heavy charge, giving Ghost one of their most direct statements of dread as entertainment. Faith keeps the guitars closer to the metal vocabulary, while See the Light and Pro Memoria push into grand, almost devotional melody. Then Dance Macabre changes the room entirely: a disco-rock death song so polished that its fatalism feels like a party invitation. Miasma, with its instrumental sweep, shows how carefully Ghost can stage drama without needing every moment to be lyrical. What makes Prequelle more than a commercial step outward is its confidence in contradiction. It is theatrical but never hollow, macabre but oddly generous, polished but still recognisably Ghost. Tobias Forge uses the band's mythology as a frame, yet the album works because the melodies are durable enough to survive outside that frame. It is the moment where Ghost's old occult pageantry begins to meet classic rock showmanship on equal terms.

Prequelle matters because it made Ghost's crossover feel less like compromise than expansion. The record kept the band's ritualistic identity while leaning into sharper hooks, 1980s rock shine and pop timing. It helped define the version of Ghost that could headline much larger rooms without abandoning the tension between camp, doom and genuine melodic craft.

For a Ghost shelf, Prequelle is the pivot between the darker early catalogue and the later imperial scale of Impera. It is especially useful for collectors who want the band's most approachable balance of heavy guitars, dramatic keyboards and chorus-first songwriting. The album also holds several live staples, which gives it lasting value beyond its release-year moment.

Theatrical hard rock with metal foundations, glossy 1980s melodrama, disco-rock flashes, cathedral keyboards and choruses that make mortality feel strangely communal.

Recommended for: Ghost fans who want the band's most accessible dark spectacle; Collectors of modern hard rock with theatrical pop instincts; Listeners drawn to big choruses wrapped in plague-era dread.
