Most Normal is Gilla Band making abnormality feel like a native language. Released in 2022, it is the Dublin group's first album under the Gilla Band name after previously recording as Girl Band, and that change does not soften anything. If anything, the record sounds like a band tearing apart its own machinery and rebuilding it with the ugly parts facing outward: noise rock, post-punk, damaged electronics, absurdist lyric fragments and rhythms that lurch as much as they groove. Backwash sets the tone with vocals that seem to ricochet through a room full of malfunctioning equipment. Bin Liner Fashion turns social humiliation and bodily awkwardness into something weirdly chantable. Eight Fivers and Post Ryan show how the band can still make tracks move even when the guitars no longer behave like guitars in any ordinary sense. The album's energy is physical, but it is never simple aggression; it feels anxious, comic, surreal and claustrophobic at once. What makes Most Normal so effective is the band's control over chaos. The record often sounds as if it is collapsing, yet the details are arranged with real intent: clipped drums, altered textures, sudden holes in the mix, lyrics that treat everyday embarrassment as horror cinema. It is not noise for shock value. It is noise as a way of describing modern life when the normal setting has become unbearable.

Most Normal matters because it pushed a well-regarded Irish noise-rock band into a more mutated and studio-conscious form without losing their live-wire personality. It captures the post-punk revival at its least tidy: not retro guitar cool, but a vivid, abrasive language for anxiety, absurdity and social discomfort.

For collectors of contemporary Irish and UK-adjacent alternative music, Most Normal is a sharp left-field anchor. It belongs near Fontaines D.C. or The Murder Capital only as a contrast point: Gilla Band are more fractured, funnier and more sonically hostile. It is the record to own when the shelf needs discomfort with purpose.

Abrasive Irish noise rock and post-punk with mangled guitars, altered vocals, unstable rhythms, surreal humour and a tense electronic undercurrent.

Recommended for: Fans of adventurous post-punk and noise rock; Collectors tracking modern Irish alternative music; Listeners who like ugly sounds arranged with precision.
