Garage Inc. is Metallica's 1998 covers project, but calling it a covers album barely explains what it does. The set gathers new recordings from the late-1990s band alongside earlier B-sides, one-offs and the original Garage Days material, turning influence into autobiography. Turn The Page takes Bob Seger's road-weariness and makes it heavier, lonelier and more metallic. Whiskey In The Jar pushes a traditional song through the Thin Lizzy lineage into a huge Metallica chorus. The Mercyful Fate medley honors the band's underground metal roots, while versions of songs associated with Diamond Head, Killing Joke, Black Sabbath, Misfits, Nick Cave and others map the record collection beneath Metallica's own language. Released after Load and Reload, it also functions as a sideways self-portrait: a band often accused of changing too much showing exactly how broad its foundations had always been. It is playful, reverent, aggressive and revealing all at once.
The album matters because it turns Metallica fandom outward. Instead of presenting the band only through original songs, Garage Inc. explains the machinery behind them: NWOBHM, punk, hard rock, classic songwriting and underground metal. It is one of the clearest maps of Metallica's musical DNA.
For collectors, Garage Inc. is the Metallica release that connects the main albums to the band's library of influences. It is especially valuable beside Kill 'Em All, Load and Reload, because it shows how raw speed, bluesy hard rock and punk directness all feed the same engine.
Heavy covers set moving from punk bite and NWOBHM worship to road-song melancholy, hard-rock swagger and long-form metal tribute medleys.
Recommended for: Metallica collectors who want the influence map; Fans of heavy cover versions and B-side history; Listeners bridging punk, hard rock and classic metal.
Is Garage Inc. made entirely of cover songs? Yes. It is a covers-focused release combining newly recorded late-1990s performances with earlier cover recordings from Metallica's history. Which Garage Inc. songs became especially well known? Turn The Page and Whiskey In The Jar became major standouts, while the Mercyful Fate medley is central for fans of Metallica's metal roots. Why is Garage Inc. important after Load and Reload? It reframed Metallica's broader sound by showing the influences behind it, from punk and NWOBHM to hard rock, classic songwriting and darker underground material.
