Originally issued in 1987, The $5.98 E.P. – Garage Days Re-Revisited caught Metallica at a pivotal moment: Jason Newsted had joined the group, and these five cover versions gave the new line-up room to lock in without the weight of a full studio album. The result is loose, loud and deliberately unpolished, channelling the underground records that helped shape Metallica’s attack. Diamond Head’s “Helpless” and Holocaust’s “The Small Hours” stretch into muscular, riff-driven workouts, while Killing Joke’s “The Wait” brings a tense post-punk edge. Budgie’s “Crash Course in Brain Surgery” is compact and propulsive; the closing Misfits pairing “Last Caress / Green Hell” swaps sprawling metal architecture for a burst of punk velocity.
