External Combustion is Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs leaning into the part of rock music that still smells faintly of valves, bar rooms and old amps. Campbell is best known as the long-time Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers guitarist, but this record is not a museum piece or a polite side project. It is loose, punchy and guitar-forward, with the band sounding like they have already done the road miles and skipped the awkward introductions. The album moves through boogie, bluesy rock and heartland grit without getting precious about any of it. Wicked Mind opens with a proper snarl, Brigitte Bardot has that crooked rock-and-roll grin, and the title track keeps the engine room warm. Guest spots from Ian Hunter and Margo Price add colour, but the main attraction is Campbell's guitar language: economical, melodic, slightly dry-witted, and never more complicated than the song needs. On vinyl it makes sense as a straight LP: two sides of no-fuss American rock with enough craft underneath the looseness to reward repeat plays. A good one for anyone who wants the Petty connection, but also wants to hear Campbell driving his own car.
