Blowin' Your Mind! is Van Morrison's 1967 solo debut, recorded in New York after Them and released around the explosive success of Brown Eyed Girl. Its history is tangled, but the music captures Morrison at a fascinating threshold: still close to garage R&B, blues and soul drive, yet already reaching toward the longer incantatory forms that would define his next breakthroughs. Brown Eyed Girl is the radiant public doorway, all clipped rhythm and youthful memory, but T.B. Sheets is the darker counterweight, stretching into dread, illness and emotional discomfort. He Ain't Give You None, Spanish Rose and Goodbye Baby keep the record grounded in brassy, bluesy momentum. Heard from the far side of Astral Weeks and Moondance, this album feels like the first solo flare: uneven in circumstance, but loaded with the voice, phrasing and restlessness that would soon open out.
Blowin' Your Mind! matters because it marks the beginning of Morrison's solo catalogue and contains Brown Eyed Girl, the song that carried him into a wider audience. More importantly, it shows the tension between pop single, R&B roots and the longer haunted performances just about to emerge.
For collectors, this is valuable as the pre-Astral Weeks Van Morrison document. It is not as unified as the classic Warner Bros. run, but that is part of its charge: the debut preserves the raw transition from band frontman to singular solo writer and singer.
1960s blue-eyed soul and R&B with garage-rock bite, brass accents, blues phrasing, bright pop hooks and a darker extended ballad undercurrent.
Recommended for: Van Morrison collectors tracing the solo story from the start; Fans of Brown Eyed Girl who want its original album setting; Listeners interested in 1967 R&B, soul and garage-pop crossroads.
