I Am Easy To Find is The National's 2019 album of expanded perspective, a record that deliberately loosens the old idea that Matt Berninger must stand alone at the centre of every room. Made in close conversation with director Mike Mills and paired with a short film starring Alicia Vikander, it turns the band's established melancholy into a many-voiced structure. Gail Ann Dorsey, Sharon Van Etten, Lisa Hannigan, Mina Tindle, Kate Stables and the Brooklyn Youth Chorus do not simply add backing colour; they redirect the emotional traffic, sometimes answering Berninger, sometimes replacing him, sometimes making the songs feel as if they are being remembered by several people at once. You Had Your Soul With You opens with bright turbulence, Quiet Light examines separation with awful calm, Rylan carries long-gestating fan mythology into the finished record, and Light Years closes with a piano farewell that feels almost too plain to resist. At over an hour, the album is intentionally generous and sometimes crowded, but that breadth is its argument: The National letting other voices complicate the story they had spent years perfecting.
I Am Easy To Find matters because it reframed The National at a point when their sound was already strongly identified. Rather than repeating the Sleep Well Beast formula, they made a 2019 record where collaboration, film language and female lead voices changed the emotional authority of the band from inside the songs.
For collectors, this is the ambitious late-2010s National album: bigger, more choral and more porous than the classic five-piece image suggests. It is especially rewarding beside Sleep Well Beast and First Two Pages Of Frankenstein, where the contrast shows how far the band were willing to stretch their frame.
Expansive chamber-indie with piano, electronics, orchestral colour, choral passages, rotating lead voices, patient drums and the band's familiar melancholy opened into a wider cast.
Recommended for: The National fans interested in their most collaborative album; Collectors of 2010s indie records with film-adjacent ambition; Listeners who like baritone-led songs expanded by female vocalists and choir.
