Sleep Well Beast is The National's 2017 album of marital weather, digital unease and middle-aged dread rendered with unusual precision. It arrived after Trouble Will Find Me had made the band's language feel almost classical, then quietly disturbed that language from within. Recorded around the Long Pond environment that would become central to Aaron Dessner's later work, the album lets electronics, programmed textures and negative space enter the frame without losing the human ache of the five-piece.
