Sleep Well Beast is The National's 2017 album of marital weather, digital unease and middle-aged dread rendered with unusual precision. It arrived after Trouble Will Find Me had made the band's language feel almost classical, then quietly disturbed that language from within. Recorded around the Long Pond environment that would become central to Aaron Dessner's later work, the album lets electronics, programmed textures and negative space enter the frame without losing the human ache of the five-piece. Nobody Else Will Be There opens as a dimly lit invitation. The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness gives the band one of its sharpest guitar-led surges. Guilty Party and Carin at the Liquor Store turn domestic fracture into patient devastation, while Day I Die and Turtleneck break the surface with anxious force. The title track ends the record in a blur of resignation rather than catharsis. As a white-coloured vinyl title, this entry has an easy visual hook, but the real draw is the album's controlled disintegration: The National sounding sleek, wounded and newly unstable.

Sleep Well Beast matters because it gave The National one of their defining late-2010s statements and won major recognition without becoming safer. It proved the band could add electronic tension and studio abstraction while keeping the emotional core painfully adult: partnership, fatigue, loyalty and drift.

For collectors, Sleep Well Beast is a core modern National title. The white-coloured vinyl context adds format appeal, but the album earns its place through the songs: The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness, Guilty Party and Carin at the Liquor Store anchor a record that deepened the band's sound rather than merely updating it.

Elegant indie rock with electronic pulses, skeletal piano, restrained guitar eruptions, crisp drums, low baritone dread and a late-night atmosphere of domestic fracture.

Recommended for: Collectors building the essential late-period National shelf; Fans of The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness and Guilty Party; Listeners who like indie rock with electronic tension and adult melancholy.
