Slanted & Enchanted is Pavement's 1992 debut album, a record that made American indie rock feel as if it had discovered a new grammar by misreading the old one beautifully. Built from the early chemistry of Stephen Malkmus, Scott Kannberg and the band's unstable first rhythm-section mythology, it arrives after the scrappy EPs but before the more social ease of Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. Summer Babe opens with heat-haze guitars and a melody that seems half-remembered from a radio station just out of range. Trigger Cut, In The Mouth A Desert and Zurich Is Stained turn fractured riffs into hooks. Here slows the record into one of the band's great wounded songs, while No Life Singed Her and Conduit For Sale! keep the noise and absurdity close. Released in the same early-1990s alternative climate that made underground rock newly visible, Slanted & Enchanted did not sound like a bid for the mainstream. It sounded like a secret handbook copied badly enough to become art.
Slanted & Enchanted matters because it helped define the sound and attitude of 1990s American indie rock: literate but not precious, noisy but melodic, casual on the surface and deeply shaped underneath. Its influence belongs in the permission it gave bands to sound unfinished with intent.
For collectors, this is the foundational Pavement album. Crooked Rain may be easier to enter, but Slanted & Enchanted is where the band first turns distortion, cracked melody, deadpan delivery and lo-fi recording into a complete worldview.
Lo-fi indie rock with jagged guitars, unstable rhythms, deadpan vocals, static-edged melody, abrupt noise bursts and a strange balance of carelessness and design.
Recommended for: Collectors of early 1990s indie rock foundations; Pavement fans tracing the band before Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain; Listeners who like melodic guitar records with distortion, wit and instability.
