Controversy is Prince's 1981 fourth album, the record where the provocation of Dirty Mind begins turning into a broader political, spiritual and pop-cultural argument. Released before 1999 made him a full crossover force, it still carries the Minneapolis one-man-band intensity of the early Warner years: Prince writes, produces and performs most of the material, using synth funk, new wave snap, rock guitar and R&B sensuality as one language. The title track is the key: it confronts questions about race, sexuality, religion and identity while turning the Lord's Prayer into part of the groove's theatre. Sexuality and Do Me, Baby extend the erotic confidence; Private Joy and Let's Work keep the funk direct; Ronnie, Talk To Russia and Annie Christian bring Cold War anxiety, violence and media dread into the room. In 1981, Controversy showed Prince refusing to choose between body music and argument. The purple mythology was not fully formed yet, but the stakes had clearly expanded.
Controversy matters because it is the hinge between the underground shock of Dirty Mind and the mass breakthrough of 1999. Prince's questions about identity, sex, faith, work and nuclear politics made the album one of his first fully public acts of self-definition, not just another funk record.
For collectors, Controversy is essential early Prince.
