Released originally in 1990, Detonator catches Ratt sharpening their Los Angeles hard-rock formula for a new decade. The guitars remain bright, wiry and full of swagger, while the choruses arrive with the scale expected of a band seasoned by arenas. After the brief “Intro to Shame,” “Shame Shame Shame” sets a brisk, riff-led pace; “Lovin’ You Is a Dirty Job” and “Scratch That Itch” keep the record moving with clipped rhythms and gleaming hooks. There is more range here than the album’s combustible title suggests. “One Step Away” and “Givin’ Yourself Away” lean into Ratt’s melodic side, giving Stephen Pearcy’s unmistakable rasp room against polished backing vocals and slower-burning arrangements. “Heads I Win, Tails You Lose” restores the strut, while “Top Secret” closes the set without softening its hard-rock edge. Detonator is a slick, late-period statement from the classic era: concise, chorus-minded and built around the tension between tough riffs and radio-ready melody.

Detonator documents Ratt carrying the Sunset Strip sound into 1990 with its identity intact: coiled guitar work, sharp rhythmic swagger and large melodic choruses. Its balance of punchy rockers and more vulnerable songs makes it a revealing final chapter in the band’s original run of studio albums.

This 2024 US reissue presents Detonator as a single stereo LP on red vinyl. Its limited-edition colour pressing gives collectors a visually distinctive alternative to standard black copies while retaining the complete eleven-track album, sequenced from the short opening introduction through “Top Secret.”

Polished and muscular hard rock: biting twin-guitar textures, firm drums, raspy lead vocals and bright, layered choruses, with power-ballad dynamics adding contrast.
