Saxon’s self-titled debut documents a band still forging the sound that would soon make it central to British heavy metal. Released originally in 1979, the album sits at a productive crossroads: the weight and swagger of 1970s hard rock meet quicker rhythms, leaner arrangements and the first sparks of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. “Rainbow Theme” flows into the atmospheric “Frozen Rainbow,” while “Big Teaser” and “Still Fit To Boogie” reveal the group’s grounding in muscular, unpretentious rock ’n’ roll. The clearest signs of Saxon’s future arrive in “Stallions Of The Highway,” “Backs To The Wall” and the closing “Militia Guard.” Riffs become sharper, Biff Byford’s voice takes on greater authority, and the road, resistance and martial imagery later associated with the band begin to emerge. Less polished and anthem-heavy than the breakthrough records that followed, Saxon is valuable precisely because it catches that transition in motion.
