We Are The Night is The Chemical Brothers in 2007, working in the unsettled space between their 1990s big-beat authority and a dance-music world that was mutating around blog-house, electro-pop and festival electronics. It is a stranger, more uneven and more interesting record than its reputation sometimes allows. The title track opens like a cartoon transmission from a nocturnal city; All Rights Reversed brings Klaxons into the Chemical orbit; Saturate turns a version of an Electronic Battle Weapon into a huge acid-bright rush; Do It Again circles a clipped vocal hook until it becomes a command; A Modern Midnight Conversation looks back toward disco and psych colour; The Pills Won't Help You Now closes with a more fragile guest-vocal mood. The album does not have the canonical force of Dig Your Own Hole or Surrender, but it captures the duo trying to keep their maximal language alive in a decade suspicious of old electronica narratives. Its best moments still detonate.
We Are The Night matters because it documents The Chemical Brothers adapting after their imperial run, with flashes of classic force inside a more fragmented 2000s landscape. Saturate and Do It Again remain strong examples of the duo's ability to make repetition feel physical and mischievous.
For collectors, We Are The Night is a useful mid-catalogue Chemical Brothers title: not the obvious first purchase, but important for understanding the period between Push the Button and Further. Its draw is the 2007 context, the guest contrasts and the continuing club utility of Saturate.
2000s electronic dance with acid bursts, clipped vocal loops, electro-pop edges, psychedelic colour, big drums, guest features, nocturnal synths and flashes of cartoonish rave energy.
Recommended for: Collectors filling the 2000s Chemical Brothers run; Listeners interested in the duo's post-big-beat evolution; Fans of Saturate, Do It Again and oddball festival electronics.
