Turns Into Stone is the Stone Roses' 1992 gathering of non-album material from the period when the band seemed to have changed Manchester guitar music by force of groove, confidence and colour. It is technically a compilation, but it feels closer to a missing companion to the 1989 debut: the tracks carry the same chemistry, yet they explore the margins where the group's legend grew. Elephant Stone has the Byrds-like sparkle and dance-floor undertow; The Hardest Thing In The World and Going Down show the pop craft around the edges; Mersey Paradise is one of the great non-album Roses songs; and Fools Gold stretches the band's rhythm obsession into a long, liquid collision of indie guitar and club culture. Because the second album took years to arrive, this set became more than a stopgap. It preserved the abundance of the first era, when even the B-sides sounded like part of a movement.
It matters because it collects the crucial singles and B-sides that complete the Stone Roses' first-phase story. Turns Into Stone shows how much of the band's importance lived outside the debut album proper, especially in the bridge between jangling indie and dance culture.
For collectors, this is essential companion material rather than a secondary compilation. Elephant Stone, Mersey Paradise, What The World Is Waiting For and Fools Gold make it a concentrated document of the band's most mythic and fertile period.
Madchester-era indie rock with chiming guitars, loose-limbed funk bass, baggy drum feel, psychedelic colour, dance-floor repetition, Ian Brown's cool vocal drift and John Squire's bright melodic lines.
Recommended for: Collectors pairing the Stone Roses debut with its key surrounding singles; Fans of Fools Gold, Elephant Stone and Mersey Paradise; Listeners tracing the indie-dance crossover around Manchester.
