Of Darkness... is Therion before the symphonic-metal identity that would later make the name famous. Released in 1991, the debut belongs to the Swedish death-metal underground: raw, politically charged, occult-tinged and still audibly connected to the late-1980s extreme-metal vocabulary from which Christofer Johnsson's project emerged. The riffs are thick and grinding, the vocals harsh, and the structures more direct than the elaborate orchestral work listeners may associate with later Therion records. Songs such as The Return, Asphyxiate With Fear and Morbid Reality carry the weight of a young band testing death metal as a vehicle for apocalypse, social disgust and ritual atmosphere. The fascination now is evolutionary. Of Darkness... is not a polished preface to the later catalogue; it is a separate creature, a document of the band's underground origins before choirs, classical arrangements and grand mythological architecture took over.
It matters because Of Darkness... shows Therion's starting point before their transformation into symphonic-metal pioneers. Hearing the debut makes the later evolution more dramatic: the grandiosity began inside a much rougher death-metal framework.
For collectors, this is the origin chapter: early Therion as a Swedish death-metal band rather than the later orchestral institution. Its value is historical, especially for listeners tracing how extreme metal acts expanded into more theatrical and symphonic forms.
Early Swedish death metal with grinding riffs, harsh vocals, raw production, occult atmosphere, political anger, thrash residue and a dense underground feel far removed from later symphonic polish.
Recommended for: Collectors tracing Therion back to their death-metal roots; Fans of early-1990s Swedish extreme metal; Listeners curious about the path from underground death metal to symphonic metal.
When was Of Darkness... released? Of Darkness... was released in 1991 as Therion's debut studio album. Does it sound like later Therion? No. It is a raw death-metal album, very different from the symphonic metal style Therion later developed. Why is Of Darkness... important? It documents the band's underground starting point and makes their later stylistic transformation easier to understand.
