You're Gonna Get It! is the 1978 second album where Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers hit the strengths of their debut harder and with less hesitation. It is short, direct and full of songs that sound like the band had been sharpened on the road. When The Time Comes opens with clean urgency, You're Gonna Get It pushes the title's threat into a lean rocker, I Need To Know is under three minutes of pure impatience, and Listen To Her Heart turns Byrds-like brightness into one of Petty's great early declarations of romantic confidence. Magnolia softens the record without weakening it, while No Second Thoughts shows the folkier underside of Petty's writing. The album's pleasure is its refusal to overexplain itself. Between the debut and Damn The Torpedoes, the Heartbreakers were becoming tougher, quicker and more sure of how much could be said with a riff, a hook and Petty sounding unimpressed.
It matters because it proves the debut was not a fluke and pushes the Heartbreakers closer to their breakthrough form. Listen To Her Heart and I Need To Know became early essentials, while the album tightened the band's power-pop and rock-and-roll instincts.
For collectors, You're Gonna Get It! is the crucial second step in the early Shelter Records run. It belongs between the debut and Damn The Torpedoes as the record where the Heartbreakers' attack becomes more focused and road-tested.
Concise rock and power pop with ringing guitars, brisk tempos, tight drums, sharp choruses, Southern melodic undertow, romantic defiance and Petty's dry, clipped delivery.
Recommended for: Collectors completing the first three Heartbreakers albums; Fans of Listen To Her Heart and I Need To Know; Listeners who like short, punchy late-1970s rock records.
