Today's Shelf Pull: Adrian Younge, Cinema for the Counter

Adrian Younge's Something About April is on the shelf today: a 2012 LP where cinematic soul, rare groove and a very good sense of lighting all get their own chair.

Some records arrive like albums. This one arrives like someone has dimmed the lights and moved the camera two inches to the left.

That is not a complaint.

Adrian Younge Presents: Something About April is on the shelf today, and it has that useful quality of sounding as if it knows exactly what colour the room should be. Not bright. Not gloomy. Somewhere in the warm middle, where the bass has polished shoes, the strings are behaving suspiciously well, and every little drum break looks as if it might be hiding a subplot.

Younge makes soul music with a director's eye.
