Today's Shelf Pull: Alice Coltrane, A Doorway With Manners

Alice Coltrane is on the shelf today with Ptah the El Daoud: a 2022 Verve By Request LP where spiritual jazz, patient space and one very serious orange sleeve all know how to hold the room.

Some records arrive as if they have merely been delivered.

Ptah the El Daoud arrives as if someone has opened a side door in the shop and found a much larger room behind the mop bucket.

Alice Coltrane is on the shelf today, with Pharoah Sanders and Joe Henderson named right there in the company, and the sleeve is not pretending to be shy about the business. Orange heat, black wing shapes, a central figure, birds, a bright white flare and enough symbolic traffic to keep a sensible person standing still for a minute before speaking.

Good. Speaking too quickly would be poor manners.
