Today's Shelf Pull: John Coltrane, Essential John Coltrane

Tender phrases, wider spaces, four sides to follow

Essential John Coltrane places tenderness beside sustained exploration across four vinyl sides. Read the full story from Kilmorna in Listowel.

The useful thing about Essential John Coltrane is the room it makes for contrast. John Coltrane can be searching without leaving tenderness behind, and this ten-track collection gives both qualities a place. Neither has to serve as an apology for the other.

This is the 2026 compilation on two black vinyl LPs, issued by Impulse! / Verve. It is not one original studio album, and its four sides are worth treating as a sequence rather than a box of separate calling cards.

For today's shelf pull in Listowel, the invitation is straightforward: follow the changes in scale. Notice how spacious ballad phrasing sits beside blues momentum and more sustained exploration. You do not need to settle on a favourite version of Coltrane before beginning.

The word essential can make a record sound like homework. Here, a more useful approach is to leave the imaginary examination alone. Listen for the difference between a phrase that seems to hold its position and music that wants to keep moving beyond it.
