Today's Shelf Pull: D'Angelo, The Groove Has Manners

D'Angelo Brown Sugar vinyl record staged on the Kilmorna record shop counter

D'Angelo's Brown Sugar is on the shelf today: a 1995 2LP where R&B, soul and hip-hop timing all sit down together and decide not to rush.

Some records do not need to hurry because the groove has already arrived ahead of them.

Brown Sugar is one of those.

D'Angelo made his debut in 1995, but it still sounds as if it has refused to join any queue. It has R&B in the room, soul in the walls, hip-hop in the timing, gospel somewhere behind the curtain, and enough old-school knowledge to make the whole thing feel lived in rather than borrowed.

That distinction matters.
