The Now Now catches Gorillaz in one of their cleanest and most immediate modes. The record is bright on the surface, with Humility and Tranz doing the quick work, but it still has that small blue hour feeling that makes the band's best pop songs linger after the hook has gone. On vinyl it plays as a compact, easy-moving album rather than a project with too many rooms.

It matters because it shows Gorillaz pulling the scale back down after Humanz. The guest list is smaller, the arrangements breathe more easily, and the songs feel like they are walking around one shared mood instead of trying to map the whole world at once.
